Short, funny reference books about the things everyone notices and nobody says out loud. Milestone birthdays, the language people use when they mean something else, and the stages of life nobody warns you about.
Why the sources are in the back
Gift books are full of numbers somebody half remembered. A wrong price for the year a reader was born is the sort of thing that reader will notice immediately, because they were there. So every price, wage and chart position in a Home Truths book is traced to the body that published it, and the list is printed where anyone can check it.
The sources are the Office for National Statistics, the Nationwide Building Society house price index, the Bank of England historical macroeconomic dataset, and the Official Charts Company. Not blogs.
Who writes them
Two people, not one. Frankie Bexley writes the milestone birthday books and the What They Actually Mean books. Ray Bickerstaff writes the survival guides.
Frankie Bexley spent years on a market stall and then years writing pub quizzes, which are the same job with the prices taken out.
Ray Bickerstaff wrote the deaths, the prices and the classifieds for regional papers, then spent a long time in records reading the forms people fill in on the worst and best days of their lives.
They met when Ray Bickerstaff edited the page Frankie's quiz went on, and sent it back with four words written on it: where did that come from. It was about question four. It was a fair question, and it is the reason every figure in every one of these books has a source at the back.
