Pub quizzes
Free. Printable. Written by somebody who did this for a living and has the scars.
Frankie Bexley spent years compiling quizzes for a brewery chain: question sets, by the week, to a fixed shape, read aloud by somebody who had not seen them before to a room that had been drinking.
The thing nobody tells you is that the questions are not the product. The argument is the product. People do not want to be told a fact. They want to settle something, out loud, with somebody who disagrees, and then be shown who was right.
So every answer here has a named source next to it. The Office for National Statistics, the Nationwide house price index, the Bank of England, the Official Charts Company. Not a blog, and not the last quiz that copied the quiz before it. An answer that cannot be proved does not settle anything, it just moves the argument to the car park.
What is coming
Rounds you can print and read out, one page each, with the answers on the back and the source under every answer. Free, no email address, nothing to join.
- What did it cost. A year, five prices, and the gap between what the room guesses and what the register says.
- What was number one. Christmas charts, which are the only charts anybody remembers.
- True or false. Six statements about money and work, four of which are designed to be got wrong by confident people.
- Name the decade. One person describes a thing without dating it. Everybody else guesses. The interesting part is not the guessing.
Not yet
This page is a holding page and is not pretending otherwise. The quizzes are being built properly rather than quickly, because a quiz with one wrong answer in it is worse than no quiz, and everybody in the room remembers which question it was.
In the meantime, every milestone birthday book already has eight rounds in the back of it, built the same way, with the answers and the sources at the back. That is where this is coming from.
