What is a Cat N car, and should you buy one?

A write-off you are allowed to drive. Sometimes a bargain, sometimes not, and the difference is knowable.

By Frankie Bexley ·

Cat N is a car an insurer decided to write off, where the damage was not structural. It is legal to repair, legal to sell and legal to drive, and it stays on the record permanently.

The write-off is an economic decision, not an engineering one. An insurer compares the cost of repair against the value of the car. A three-year-old car with a damaged door and a working everything else is repairable; it is just not repairable for less than the car is worth to them.

Cat N and Cat S are not the same thing

Cat S is structural. Something in the shell or the chassis was damaged. Cat N is non-structural, which covers everything from cosmetic panels to electrics and water damage.

Both are write-offs and both stay on the history check forever. The category tells you which kind of damage. It does not tell you how bad it was or how well it was put back together, and that is the gap where the money is.

What it costs you, even if the repair was perfect

The two questions that settle it

Ask what the damage was, and ask who repaired it. A documented repair by a named body shop on a car with a clear description of what happened is a genuine bargain and there is nothing wrong with it. An unknown repair on a car nobody can describe is a different purchase at the same price.

If the seller cannot answer both, that is the answer.

Questions people ask about this

Is it safe to buy a Cat N car?

It can be. Cat N means the damage was not structural, so the shell was not compromised. Whether that particular car is safe depends on what was damaged and who repaired it, which is why those are the two questions to ask before the price is discussed.

Does Cat N stay on a car forever?

Yes. The category is recorded permanently and shows on a history check for the rest of the car life. That is why it affects what you can sell it for as well as what you paid.

How much cheaper should a Cat N car be?

It is priced below an equivalent clean car, and it sells on again at a similar discount, so the saving is smaller than it first looks. Treat the gap as compensation for a narrower resale market rather than as money saved.
